5x16 “Dark Side of the Moon”
“It’s okay, Mom. Dad still loves you. I love you too. I’ll never leave you.”

Dean and Mary scenes will never not make me emotional. The show has gone out of its way to emphasize time and again how important Mary was and still is for Dean and how him and her are so alike. Looking at this scene I can’t help but wonder if Dean’s immeasurable ability to love as well as his fear of loneliness and abandonment is something he shares with his mother too. After all Dean told her that he’d never leave her, which seems important given the amount of emotional intelligence Dean possessed as a 4-year-old already.

And well he never left her. She may have died, but she always continued to live with(in) him. Dean never let her go, carried her picture everywhere he went and gravitated to women resembling his mother even when he was a demon. It was ultimately the memory of her love that made him stop in S10 when he was lost to the mark. Their connection has always been one of my favourite things about the show. And though this is nothing new or something I haven’t said before, seeing this scene play out when re-watching, I just continue to love how the show has been explaining and framing Dean’s love for pie or sandwiches. It’s a memory of safety and home. Of a time when everything seemed alright. It’s a memory of unconditional motherly love.
